During his Sermon on the Mount, recorded in The Gospel of Matthew (Matt 5-7), Jesus brought us the good news and instruction on how we should live in a way that pleases and honours God. Essentially speaking out the gospel and how we should live as Christians.
In Matthew 5:1-12 we read the blessings followed by the next verses:
Matthew 5:13-16 MSG
Salt and Light.
““Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. “Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”
The above words ring true to life and paint such profound pictures. Jesus says very clearly that He wants us to be just that as His representatives; Salt and Light.
It is amazing the difference salt can make to the flavour of food. Salt will transform ordinary good food into a flavourful delicious, even extraordinary dish, when an experienced cook is serving it.
One single candle light can transform a pitch dark place into a space that the eye can see and even enjoy. Light in the darkness brings comfort and hope, or a way out and through, a seemingly lost situation. Many lights can brilliantly brighten when they shine together. Light brings clarity, light gives us clearer vision.
In Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus tells us that we are here on this earth to stand out. As Christians, Jesus wants us to live our lives in a way that show our love and commitment to Him, by the way we love others.
We are to bring flavour and light to everything that is bland and dark. People need to taste and see that the Lord is good! (Psalm 34:8)
When we live our faith in action and others can sense God’s Love working through us, we are representing Jesus.
We are to bring flavour and light to those who don’t know Jesus and in such a way, draw them towards Him.
We are to stand out.
Lord Jesus, thank you for coming to live amongst men to show us Your way. I want to be Salt and Light for You. Help me to represent Your Love to everyone around me, in such a way that they would want to know You too. Let me stand out for You.
